Hilary Benn sees the LOGIK of union learning in Leeds

Leeds Central MP and Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Hilary Benn saw how constituents are benefiting from union-led learning during a visit to the LOGIK Centre at Leeds University. The MP met union learning reps from Unite, UNISON and UCU as well as learners. They were keen to tell him about how they had improved their skills at the learning centre. The centre has been so successful, as the result of Union Learning Fund* (ULF) funding, that Leeds University has taken over the centre on a permanent basis. Hilary Benn was a key player in setting up the ULF fund, which has supported hundreds of similar projects.

Unionlearn regional manager Dr Alan Roe accompanied the MP on the visit and highlighted the achievements of union-led learning in workplaces throughout Leeds.

Hilary Benn MP, said: 'By supporting this union learning centre, Leeds University is opening its doors to a wider range of learners and offering opportunities for more people to change their lives through learning. The LOGIK Centre is an excellent example of how trade unions are helping people to improve their skills and their life chances.'

Dr Alan Roe, regional manager, unionlearn* with Yorkshire and the Humber TUC said: 'Leeds University has always been a leader in increasing the skills of the workforce. I am sure that the success of the trade union- led LOGIK Centre will continue and that working people in Leeds will benefit.'
