union learning celebrates an excellent eight

As the regional learndirect* Achievement Awards 2008 approach (Thursday 12th June) union learning has already made its mark on this year's proceedings, with eight of the finalists either a trade union education centre, (supported by unionlearn*, the TUC's learning and skills organisation) or an individual linked to a trade union education learning centre.

The learndirect Achievement Awards were set up to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the learners and employers using learndirect and the learndirect centres supporting them in their learning. Since last year's national award ceremony in October, more than 180,000 people have taken a learndirect course.

Of the nine categories, there is at least one union learning linked regional finalist in five of those. The union-linked nominations are:

Learndirect Centre of the year Award - Newcastle College Trade Union Education Centre

Working with Employers Award - Newcastle College Trade Union education Centre

Skills for Work Award - Catherine Mary Mitchell (Newcastle College TU Ed Centre learner)

Outstanding Learner Award - Catherine Mary Mitchell (Newcastle College TU Ed Centre learner)

Unionlearn Award - David Mayor, Janis Clark , Natalie Wood and Jacqui Robinson (Newcastle College TU Ed centre learners)

Carol Wood, Project Co-ordinator at Newcastle College Trade Union Education Centre said: 'learndirect is a fantastic resource to help re-engage workers back into learning as it is accessible, has something to suit everyone and is flexible enough to cater for the most hectic or difficult schedules that can often prevent people from achieving their aspirations.

Our staff and learners work exceptionally hard to achieve what they do and these awards are about celebrating their efforts and hopefully inspiring others to do the same.'

Barney McGill, unionlearn regional manager said: 'It's fantastic to be part of the learndirect awards and having six of the finalists linked to union learning just illustrates the contribution unions make to the learning and workforce development agendas. Every one of the six finalists deserves to win an award and regardless of the outcome on Thursday, they are all winners.'

The regional awards take place on Thursday 12th June at The Baltic, Gateshead.
