Firefighters sail into Adult Learners Week
A second outcome of the course is some the course fee is supporting the Sea Cadets, a nationwide voluntary uniformed youth organisation wi th its origin dating as far back as 1854 .
The FBU accessed this funding through the Learning and Skills for All fund in the North West which provided specific funding for Learning at Work day events. The FBU have set up access to courses at fire stations throughout the North West varying from Skills for Life* and ICT* through to mountain bike riding and sailing! FBU North West Learning Coordinator Garry Harney said ' We are really pleased with the funding we have received through unionlearn. It has allowed us to get people accessing learning in ways they would never have dreamt of in the past. It is also good to see the sailing course having a positive impact in other areas. The Sea Cadets probably have the longest continuous history of any youth movement in the UK and it's important that we as adults support these type of organisations. We hope to expand on this relationship with more courses rolling out later in the year.' Dave Eva, unionlearn regional manager, said ' The FBU have been really imaginative in coming up with new ways to attract members back into learning. Work life balance is a key theme for unionlearn within this year's Adult Learners Week and we see workplace learning as a key way to help people develop new skills and interests. This is of benefit to individuals, trade unions and employers and it is also a fantastic side effect that they are supporting the Sea Cadets at the same time. '
