Count on us

Anyone who has been confused about the right change in a shop, struggled with their kids' long division or scratched their head over their pay packet knows that maths is not just a miserable classroom memory.

That's why unionlearn is teaming up with NIACE* and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) with a new campaignand website maths4us.org.uk to encourage ULRs and others to help improve adult numeracy. The aim is to give people a second chance to get to grips with maths and make World Maths Day as exciting and important as World Book Day.

Maths4Us introdusction video

This is a two minute animated film that brings the importance of everyday maths alive. This can be used as a tool to  encourage parents, colleagues, workmates… etc to get involved in learning new practical maths skills.

As part of a maths action plan, unionlearn will:

  • increase the number of ULRs on Skills for Life* training;
  • support ULRs to improve their own literacy and numeracy skills;
  • establish a numeracy focus for adult learner initiatives;
  • develop a range of resources to support union-led numeracy learning;
  • support numeracy tutors through the numeracy focus group, web based communication, workshops and conferences.

The campaign is also looking at ways to promote puzzles, Countdown contests and conundrums to take the fear factor out of maths. For more information please visit www.maths4us.org
