ULR for hire - Taxi drivers in the North West

Union Learning Fund* skills for life project 2008 to 2010

taxi drivers In May 2007 Unite set up a North West Taxi Driver Consortium to look at the learning and organising issues regarding taxi drivers. Like Passenger and Road Transport Drivers, the Sector Skills Councils were putting training standards in place to up-skill drivers and support them having a formal qualification.

Taxi drivers are an unusual and hard to reach group of learners, mainly because of their self-employed status and the fact that any training that they undertake will be conducted during their own time and at their own expense.

Unite also had the double problem of the fact that because colleges had not previously delivered this type of qualification they did not have the relevant trainers and NVQ* assessors.

So the Project concentrated on:

  • Identifying and training Taxi Driver ULRs
  • Attaching these ULRs to various colleges within the region so that they can help with the recruitment and delivery of the training
  • Organising Recruiting new members

Results to date are as follows:

  • 19 new Taxi Driver ULRs
  • 376 taxi drivers enrolled on a Level 2 NVQ Transporting Passengers by Taxi and Private Hire Qualification
  • 202 taxi drivers have completed their course and awaiting results
  • 64 taxi drivers have achieved the full NVQ Qualification
  • A new Taxi Drivers Union Branch will be set up in Knowsley following the successful recruitment of 52 new members
  • 30 new taxi driver members recruited in Chester
  • 29 new members recruited in Ellesmere Port
  • overall growth in new members of 134 since Unite started the project.

Absolutely key to all of this is the fact that it is the taxi driver reps themselves that are developing, organising and delivering this whole programme

The Taxi Driver ULRs will have a stand at the Liverpool Area on 28th & 29th July for the TAXI ROAD SHOW where they will be showcasing what they have been doing within the North West and hopefully recruit more new members.
