unionlearn - TUC learning and skills project - to take over £15 million Union Learning Fund*

Alan Johnson, Secretary of State for Education and Skills, will attend the final national conference of the Union Learning Fund (ULF) today (Wednesday 11th October) and will join Frances O'Grady, TUC Deputy Secretary General, and Liz Smith, Director of unionlearn who will also address over 350 delegates.

The conference will look forward to the transfer of the ULF, currently nearly £15 million, to unionlearn in April next year. The transfer is a recognition of unionlearn's continuing success in building union learning programmes that have recruited nearly 15,000 union learning reps and have encouraged over 100,000 people to access courses in the last year.

Unionlearn Director, Liz Smith said:

'The transfer of the Union Learning Fund is a vote of confidence in unionlearn's ability to administer it in a fair and effective way. This is not new money from the Government, but an existing fund designated for union learning, which aims to upskill employees in the workplace to fight the UK's current skills crisis. With more than a third of employers refusing to train their staff, unions have a vital role in bridging that gap.

'We welcome Alan Johnson to the conference. He will learn of our successes in workplace learning that have been achieved through the dedication of nearly 15,000 Union Learning Reps. Success has also come from the supportive environments created by those employers who recognise that better skilled workers mean a more successful workplace.'

The conference will also witness the signing of a new agreement between the Open University and unionlearn , offering a 10 percent discount on OU courses for union members. This will open up a range of OU courses for over six and a half million union members.

NOTES TO EDITORS:
