A new type of union activist, the Union Learning Representative (ULR), has been instrumental in raising interest in training and development, especially among the lowest skilled workers and those with literacy and numeracy needs.

This handbook is a major source of information and advice for trade unions and their representatives who are or want to be involved in accessing trainingfor theirmembers. It includes hints on how to link training with union organisation; the functions and rights of ULRs; how to negotiate learning agreements; how to set up workplace learning committees; how ULRs can use services such as the unionlearn advice service and Climbing Frame tool; details of TUC Education ULR courses; government schemes to support learners and a comprehensive jargon buster.

Lowestoft: Recession and Recovery Skills Roadshow Event
This free event is aimed at union officers and others in the East of England involved with workplace learning, providing all the information they need to support members facing redundancy and details of all the funding that is available. It would be particularly useful to ULRs and other union reps who are concerned about possible redundancies at their workplaces. Lunch will also be provided. Tony hailed a winner!
Merseytravel union learning representative (ULR) Tony Norbury has been awarded the regional individual National Training Award for for the positive impact his individual training journey has had on the taxi and private hire sector. Tony, from Tranmere on the Wirral, received his award from North West Tonight presenter Ranvir Singh at the Palace Hotel, Manchester on Tuesday 13th October.As as a result, he will go on to represent the North West at the National Training Awards (NTA) in London on the 10th December.

Nicola Njie gets ULR of the year award from Gordon Brown
Nicola Njie is a call centre customer service specialist at E.ON in the Midlands. She has been credited with helping bring thousands of learning opportunities to E.ON colleagues and for recruiting at least 500 new members to her union Unison.

Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy checks out union learning at Tesco.
Wavertree MP Jane Kennedy visited Tesco (Friday 19th June) in Old Swan to see for herself the impact trade unions are having on helping staff to improve their skills. The Union of Shopworkers, Distribution and Allied Workers (USDAW) with the support of unionlearn, the TUC's learning and skills organisation, and Tesco have established a learning initiative that enables staff based at the store to develop their own potential and career opportunities.
