Union Learning Representative

ULR imageA new type of union activist, the Union Learning Representative (ULR), has been instrumental in raising interest in training and development, especially among the lowest skilled workers and those with literacy and numeracy needs.

Working for Learners - a handbook for unions and their union learning representatives

This handbook is a major source of information and advice for trade unions and their representatives who are or want to be involved in accessing training for their members. It includes hints on how to link training with union organisation; the functions and rights of ULRs; how to negotiate learning agreements; how to set up workplace learning committees; how ULRs can use services such as the unionlearn advice service and Climbing Frame tool; details of TUC Education ULR courses; government schemes to support learners and a comprehensive jargon buster.

Unionlearn East of England Regional Forums and U-Net launch
The next round of East of England Regional Forums will be hosting the sub regional launches of U Net. U-Net is a partnership between trade unions, learndirect, colleges and employers, run by unionlearn (the TUC's learning and skills organisation).

West Ham MP Lyn Brown sees the value of union learning at East Ham
Local MP Lyn Brown will today (Friday 27th June) visit East Ham Town Hall to see how union learning reps (ULRs) are improving Newham Council's employees' skills levels. At the Council, there are over 9,000 staff, who are encouraged by 14 ULRs from the UNISON trade union to return to learning. Lyn spoke to learners and ULRs and heard from her constituents how they had benefited from courses on basic numeracy and literacy, IT and English as a Foreign Language (ESOL).

MP visits local workplace project
MP for Hartlepool, Iain Wright will today (Friday) be visiting the union-led workplace learning project at Hartlepool Borough Council. The meeting, to be held at the town's Civic Centre between 2.00 and 3.00pm, will see Mr Wright meet Union Learning Reps and hear about the difference that the ‘Together' project has made to the Council workforce.
