A new type of union activist, the Union Learning Representative (ULR), has been instrumental in raising interest in training and development, especially among the lowest skilled workers and those with literacy and numeracy needs.

This handbook is a major source of information and advice for trade unions and their representatives who are or want to be involved in accessing trainingfor theirmembers. It includes hints on how to link training with union organisation; the functions and rights of ULRs; how to negotiate learning agreements; how to set up workplace learning committees; how ULRs can use services such as the unionlearn advice service and Climbing Frame tool; details of TUC Education ULR courses; government schemes to support learners and a comprehensive jargon buster.

Norwich: Norfolk and Suffolk workplace learning forum, Tuesday 21st September
The next Norfolk and Suffolk workplace learning forum will take place on Tuesday 21st September from 10:00-3:30 at Norwich Trade Union Studies Centre. As usual, there will be an overview of the latest developments in union learning nationally and in the East of England, and a selection of posters, leaflets and booklets on every topic from apprenticeships to professional development for union officers. Topics this time will include the manufacturing sector and higher education opportunities.
The forum will also give trade union reps and officers, providers, Train to Gain brokers, Sector Skills Councils and anyone else involved with workplace learning the opportunity to meet and exchange information.
Lunch will be provided and there is no charge for this event.

Union Learning Reps boost training and workplace morale, survey shows
Three-quarters of union learning reps have helped arrange courses for their colleagues and almost half have obtained funding for learning, a survey has found. The survey shows that ULRs are playing an increasingly significant role in providing work-related learning and training.
