A new type of union activist, the Union Learning Representative (ULR), has been instrumental in raising interest in training and development, especially among the lowest skilled workers and those with literacy and numeracy needs.

This handbook is a major source of information and advice for trade unions and their representatives who are or want to be involved in accessing trainingfor theirmembers. It includes hints on how to link training with union organisation; the functions and rights of ULRs; how to negotiate learning agreements; how to set up workplace learning committees; how ULRs can use services such as the unionlearn advice service and Climbing Frame tool; details of TUC Education ULR courses; government schemes to support learners and a comprehensive jargon buster.

Book your place now for the February and March network meetings and forums for ULRs and other reps in the Southern & Eastern region. Meetings will feature ideas for Learning at Work Day activities and an update on Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) services. Meet up with other union reps and local colleges, exchange information and find ways to organise learning across the local area.

More than Fair results from MDEC Open Day
Results in from the MDEC Learning Fair suggest that Members of the CWU are more than keen to engage with learning. A very excited Lead Union Learning Rep, Leo Haynes told us that 'I'm on such a buzz' after initial worries about the success of the event. In Leo's words ‘it was an all round fab day!'
