embargo: For immediate release Union activity brings over 10,000 adults back into learningMore than 10,000 adults have been brought back into learning in the North East as a direct result of trade union learning representative activity, supported by trade unions and unionlearn* in the region. Unionlearn, the TUC's learning and skills organisation, has been working with the Learning and Skills Council North East and the Regional Development Agency, one northeast, over the past 5 years to help deliver the regional Learning for All Fund (LfAF). The LfAF is a pot of money to help unions set up workplace learning projects to help upskill the people of the region. Union Learning Rep (ULR) activity resourced through the Learning for All programme has made a considerable impact on the Regional Skills Partnership objective of raising skills levels of adults in the region. The LfAF aims to create a learning environment within workplaces and support adults back into learning through formal and informal learning opportunities - from holiday Spanish and digital photography to NVQs* and degrees, and everything in between. Barney McGill, Unionlearn Regional Manager said: 'This is a huge achievement and illustrates just how effective trade unions are at engaging their members and colleagues with the learning agenda. However, there is still work to be done and it is imperative that learning, and the opportunities it presents, are available to every person in every workplace. So, I look forward to celebrating an even higher number next year!'
