Learning at work day makes a real impression in the northern region

Learning at Work Day 2008 looks set to make a real impression across the northern region as 35 union-led workplace projects have been successful in their bids to access funding to run events and open days on and around Learning at Work Day, 22nd May.

As soon as the opportunity to gain funding was announced on our website and through union contact networks, there was an influx of bids from across the region - and beyond, with one enquiry even coming from as far afield as Ireland.

The 35 successful bids come from both the public and private sectors and a whole cross-section of unions. They are extremely diverse; from care homes, to prisons and even energy suppliers. Whilst there are existing projects reaching further and supplementing their ongoing activities, it is fantastic that many of the bids have come from new learning projects looking to kick-start union-led learning in their workplace.

The ideas for events are also extremely interesting and varied. There will be open days, road shows, taster sessions covering everything from aromatherapy to higher skills, along with expert help and guidance to hand in the form of ULRs and tutors.

Barney McGill, regional manager said: ' The level of interest and the innovative ideas that we've seen through this bidding process has been amazing. I wish every project the best of luck with their dynamic endeavours and hope workers across the whole region take advantage of the opportunities to get back into learning that Learning at Work Day, Adult Learners Week and the year-round service of ULRs provide.'
