embargo: 00:01 Friday 13th MP visits local workplace project MP for Hartlepool, Iain Wright will today (Friday) be visiting the union-led workplace learning project at Hartlepool Borough Council. The meeting, to be held at the town's Civic Centre between 2.00 and 3.00pm, will see Mr Wright meet Union Learning Reps and hear about the difference that the 'Together' project has made to the Council workforce. The Together project was created in 2003 in partnership with Hartlepool Council, TUC/unionlearn and the joint trade unions led by Unison. The project was supported for the first four years by unionlearn's Learning for All Fund, a pot of money to help unions to set up and run workplace learning projects. Since then the project has demonstrated its sustainability by continuing to support the 16 ULRs who remain active within the diverse workforce. Almost 400 staff have successfully completed skills for life qualifications and over 150 staff have achieved a first level 2 qualification. The project received national recognition in 2006, wining an award at the Local Government Awards for their work on skills for life. One of their newest pilot initiatives through 'Together' is empowering ULRs to identify issues around stress, domestic violence, financial problems and homelessness in order to better understand the implications of these factors and their relation to learning. Iain Wright, MP for Hartlepool said: ' It is fantastic to be able to get out into workforces in my constituency and see innovative and practical projects like the one at Hartlepool Borough Council. Ensuring that we have the skills to meet the challenges of the modern economy is something we must address as a country, and I'm particularly pleased that the trade union movement is at the forefront of this agenda. 'Equipping workers with improved skills and knowledge that they can use both in and out of work to benefit themselves, their employers and their families is paramount to the prosperity and wellbeing of the town and the North East. The partnership between union and employer is exemplary and both are reaping the benefits of a sustained and dynamic workforce development project .' Barney McGill, unionlearn regional manager said: 'Getting our region's MPs visiting dynamic union-led learning projects in their constituencies is further testimony to the importance of such projects delivering for individuals, employers and the government. 'Unions play a major role in upskilling our workers, helping people to change their lives through learning. The Together project is going from strength to strength thanks to the efforts of Hartlepool Borough Council, the unions and the hundreds of staff who have engaged.'
