CWU Congratulates

Presentation Day Charts both Successes and Progression for the CWU Tutors of the Future

'It Always seems Impossible until it is Done' Nelson Mandela.

Due to the strong partnership built up over a number of years between the CWU, Unite and Stoke-on-Trent College, we were able to deliver a free Adult Learner Support course to ULRs in the Midlands and the North West. This was taken up by over 30 ULRs who are now qualified to support learners in a learning environment with ULRs, specialising in either ESOL*, Literacy or Numeracy.

A presentation event was held at Stoke-on-Trent College on Friday 18th July to recognise these achievements. ULRs have successfully completed the ALS plus the National Test in Literacy and or Numeracy. However, progression was there for all to see as we had two ULRs who were being presented with their level 3 (7302) tutoring qualification, delivered by Kay Brockall's team at Evolve your Future in Northampton.

Trish Lavelle, CWU Head of Education, enthused 'we are seeing ULRs in the Midlands driving their own strategy forward through embedding the learning agenda into their Branch LCs. This is producing an organised and structured ULR* skills base that promotes long-term sustainability. It is commendable to see Regional Learning Committee policy enacted on the ground'.

'Branches need trained ULRs that build a skills structure which will enhance their LC in the future. The ALS course is one element; the second is having a ULR trained to deliver professional Information, Advice and Guidance. This is a necessity to deliver the funding element that sustains the lifespan of the LC and raises the standard of provision offered to our members,' stated Dave Condliffe RPW Midlands.

'This course raised my awareness of everyone's skills for life needs and my placement was both fulfilling and challenging but overall it has enthused me to work towards becoming a tutor in the near future in order to assist my members first hand,' commented Bob Hammond ULR Fujitsu.

Karen Bruce, Course Team Leader, Stoke-on-Trent College, praised the commitment and sacrifices made by all of the ULRs. 'It is a pleasure to see so many learners here today, as I know a number made the weekly round trip of over 150 miles to attend throughout the course. The position of ULR means that this award is an essential step in their development, and LCs will benefit from having such a qualified and dedicated ULRs available. You are a valuable asset to any LC'

Midlands ULRs Steve Hackford; Vera Kelsey; Paul Ims; Lynn Ribanno; Rob Smith; Paul Bosworth; Bob Hammond; Mick Jones; Dave Tildsley; Dennis Creary; Penny Harrison

North West ULRs Graham Bebbington; Meryl Ridgeway (Crewe).
