Award-winning Cityclean union learning rep briefs Minister on skillsUnion learning rep (ULR) and Brighton street sweeper Martin Vince, who works at Cityclean, briefed David Lammy MP, Minister for Skills on trade union-led learning at Cityclean, here in Brighton. Martin is well-qualified to brief the Minister as earlier this year he won the NIACE* Adult Learners' Week* Outstanding Regional Learner of the Year Award and the unionlearn-sponsored award in the South East. Martin spoke to the Minister at a unionlearn* (the TUC's learning and skills organisation) reception at TUC Congress in Brighton, where Prime Minister Gordon Brown addressed the Congress dinner on Tuesday. Also speaking at the reception were TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O'Grady and unionlearn Director Liz Smith. Martin is a member of the GMB union and a ULR* at CityClean's Hollingdean Depot, Brighton & Hove City Council. In his late forties, Martin is now getting qualifications for the first time in his life, after a challenging background which made learning anything but easy for him. Martin is one of over 20,000 ULRs in workplaces throughout the country who are making a real difference improving people's skills, confidence and life chances. Minister for Skills David Lammy MP said: 'I always enjoy meeting union learning reps because they are so passionate about what they do. Speaking to Martin Vince, here at the TUC Congress, has given me a better insight into how skills are being improved across Brighton. Over 20,000 union learning reps are helping people in workplaces across the country gain the confidence to embark on the skills training they need to succeed, and the Government is fully behind them.' Martin Vince said: 'I am extremely pleased to have the chance to brief the Minister on skills in Brighton. At CityClean, the GMB, working together with management in partnership has really brought benefits to the workforce. As a union learning rep, I can see the transformation in people who have gained not only skills, but confidence through learning. 'I left school with no training or qualifications and now I feel confident enough in my skills not only to get qualifications, but also to help others get the chances that I have had.'
