FBU Suffolk ULRs shortlisted for Quality Improvement Agency STAR awardHaving been successful in the QIA regional nominations the FBU's Union Learning Reps in Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service have been short listed at the national QIA 'STAR' awards. Their nomination , from over 1,000, assessed by a panel of independent experts , has been shortlisted in the ' Workforce Development'category, sponsored by Lifelong Learning UK and is another first for the FBU as it develops its Lifelong Learning strategy in the Fire and Rescue Service. Steve Brinkley, FBU's East Anglia ULF Co-ordinator is quite rightly proud of the nomination and the work the ULRs have put in to achieve it and he praised the partnership with the management of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service. Steve said: 'Suffolk FBU ULRs deserve to be nominated for this award. The work they've carried out has engaged over 100 staff in learning across all departments, who otherwise may not have had access to the courses offered to them. This has helped staff develop their skills at work and unlock their potential as they gain the confidence to take up further learning, increasing their promotion prospects. We also welcome the agreement made with management in Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service that has supported and assisted the learners by giving them time during working hours to access and complete their courses. Suffolk FBU ULRs should be proud of the part they are playing in supporting Firefighters and other employers to meet the requirements of Workforce Development in the Fire and Rescue Service.' Trevor Shanahan, FBU ULF National Manager added his congratulations saying: 'We are really starting to see the fruits of what a learning partnership between union and management can bring. The FBU is very proud of its ULRs in Suffolk and the achievements of the learners themselves. Well done to all involved.' The award winners will be announced at the ceremony which takes place on Monday 24th November at Old Billingsgate. Hosted by Mike Baker, BBC broadcaster and Dr Floella Benjamin OBE the ceremony will take place in front of an audience of short-listed nominees, their nominators' special guest David Lammy MP, Minister of State for Higher Education and Intellectual Property will present the awards.
