More than Fair results from MDEC Open Day

Results in from the MDEC Learning Fair suggest that Members of the CWU are more than keen to engage with learning! A very excited Lead Union Learning Rep, Leo Haynes told us that 'I'm on such a buzz' after initial worries about the success of the event. In Leo's words 'it was an all round fab day! '
The event, held on Wednesday, 21st Sept at the site near Plymouth station, is home to about 750 Royal Mail staff. Leo continued 'we had over 150 staff came through the doors to the event, a great response'. The event was supported by various partners to the Communications Workers Union, including Achievement Training, the Plymouth Adult Community Learning Services, and Carrie Mann from unionlearn.
There was so much interest that Leo has been able to immediately fill two Spanish classes, with enough interest for another language course. Staff were also tempted with Indian Head Massage, and further courses will follow when Leo has completed the returns from the expressions of interest forms completed by those attending.
This is a real boost for Leo and his colleagues, Mark Oram and Mandy Dewdney, who have been fighting what, seemed an uphill battle for sometime to kit out their own Discovery learning centre on the site. Their enthusiasm seems to have been rewarded with the knowledge that despite the time it has taken to bring these plans to fruition there is a great interest in their workplace.
The event was planned around a number of different stands, and a quiz that Leo had put together, which meant that staff had to visit each stand to get the answers. Union Support Officer, Carrie Mann, was very impressed with what she saw as 'good working practices' exhibited by the ULRs. She enthused that 'the ULRs were fantastic, making sure they were 'meeting and greeting' all those who attended' and further commented 'with that number of people, this can be a tiring thing to do all day'.
Carrie was also impressed with what she saw as an innovative approach using the quiz. Commenting, 'it was not only a great ice-breaker for the staff but also proved a quick way of recording who had attended the event'.
One Member who turned up even offered to take some pictures to record the day's event. Leo hasn't confirmed yet whether his man will be attending a Photography course in the near future, but we expect given his success this will be a forgone conclusion!
Steve Kerswill, from Achievement Training was also suitably impressed and commented, 'we were delighted to support the ULR's in promoting learning, it was great to see such an excellent turn out and the high level of interest. Clearly this was a reflection of all the hard work put in by the ULR's. We look forward to meeting the learning aspirations of their colleagues in the near future'.
Also present was PACLS, Plymouth Adult Community Learning Services, offering courses in languages and Indian Massage. On sale at the event were cakes made by one of the Reps, Chris Newby. The proceeds of the sale will go to the Plymouth Highbury Trust. Appropriately, this society started in 1965, gives self help and support for people with learning disabilities living in the Plymouth area.
