Unionlearn will be holding an Apprenticeship celebration event on Wednesday 6th June in Manchester’s historic Mechanics Institute as part of a week of events at the building which hosted the first ever TUC Congress in June, 1868.
This year sees the TUC celebrate 150 years since its first national conference in Manchester. During that time while much has changed the TUC’s mission remains the same: standing up for working women and men, and making sure their voices are heard.
The original congress agenda included technical education and the ‘limitation of apprenticeships’ which is assumed to mean the proper regulation of them.
To celebrate this landmark TUC\unionlearn are hosting an event at the historic Mechanics Institute that celebrates apprenticeships past, present and future.
Delegates will have a chance to hear from key speakers from across the North West including Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham and former technician apprentice Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham.
Mary Sayers from Unite in Schools will also speak about the unions program promoting the benefits of trade unions to young people, and there will other speakers from employers, unions and providers to be confirmed.
Regional TUC Education Officer Tony Saunders said:
The intention is to make the day a celebration of our history and chance to look at the issues facing unions today.”
The activities will include looking at how union representatives can work together and workshops to support quality apprenticeship programs to give working people opportunities to succeed.”
The day will include a visit by pupils from a local school, who will help celebrate the TUCs history and have a chance to explore the Institute, along a number of short videos on apprenticeship support.
Unionlearn Project Officer Mark Rowe added:
Come and learn about what we are doing to support apprentices across the UK. Find out how you can support apprenticeship programs in your present work place.”
It’s an opportunity to celebrate our proud history. But even more importantly, it’s a chance for us to reach out to a new generation and get ready for the challenges of the next 150 years.”
The TUC 150 Apprentice Celebration event takes place on Wednesday 6th June at The Mechanics Institute, 103 Princess St, Manchester from 10.00 to 15.00
