Not everyone has access to the opportunities provided by education. We believe they should. That’s why we at the WEA help adults access courses and skills, no matter where they are, no matter their circumstances. 

Ordinarily, we take our courses out into communities nationwide, reaching people that conventional adult education can’t because they are often the ones that need it most.  

2020 saw us rapidly grow our tailored, supportive online digital provision in response to the UK national lockdown. Supporting 23,000 students to access skills, companionship and services digitally.  

With our considered approach to providing more accessible online learning we offer additional support to adults who need it most and help to grow digital confidence through our digital champions who are on hand to help - because no one should be left offline.  

Our professional tutors take the time to build trust and empathy with each student we teach (whether it’s online or offline), so we understand how learning can improve their lives, not just what their learning needs are inside the classroom. Because we know that when you take the time to get closer, it pays off.  

We’ve been helping adults to learn since 1903, and with 2,000+ locations around the country and our new fantastic nationwide digital classroom offering, it means the WEA is fully within the reach of the people that need it most.  

Our approach is simple - we integrate functional skills into all our courses; our tutors tailor the programme to meet the needs of students and partner organisations. Programmes and solutions we offer include: 

• Moving on: work and you - recognise your strengths and potential, develop skills, understand the local job market and find good work - Work for yourself - how to get started in self-employment 
• Digital skills: developing essential digital skills up to Level 2 so that you are equipped for future learning and employment and can be confident online
• Managing change: working in a new sector - including adult social care; community interpreting 
• Health and wellbeing: build your resilience and mental health, and develop skills relevant to employment 
• Widening your outlook: understanding the ‘new normal’ - take a step back and explore the ways we look at the world of work through the context of human rights and equalities
• Create: engage creatively and critically with the world through creative writing, philosophy and practical art 

There’s a lot of hard work ahead for the WEA charity to help those affected from recent events but we know its worth it and we thank everyone for the on-going support we receive.
