Before having the privilege of being invited to work on ‘The Write Offs’, I had very little awareness, knowledge and understanding of the word ‘dyslexia’.

It’s a word I’d definitely heard of, but in all honesty, had never really understood.

I had ignorantly never considered how much more difficult life can be when you struggle with reading and writing; how frustrating it must be when things make sense in your head but you can’t put them down on paper; when words scramble on the pages; when letters blur into one another; and when people just label you stupid or lazy… I had no idea of not only how difficult it is living with dyslexia but also living with the stigma sadly associated with it. 

Whilst on my quest to find individuals to take part in the project, I very quickly came to realise this was not going to be easy but I was delighted when I made initial contact with the TUC who were so keen to come on board and join me in helping to raise awareness of this hugely important national issue that is so widely misunderstood, and in truth, has been vastly ignored…until now.

With the help of the TUC I was introduced to the most incredible person in Tommy, who went on to become a contributor on the programme, and in telling his story won the hearts of the nation through his openness, valor and determination. 

When Tommy shared his story onscreen, he spoke from his heart and broke down barriers that had held him back for most of his life. It truly was an honour to be a part of his journey and there certainly wasn’t a dry eye in my house as I watched him deliver his end speech in the finished film from my sofa.

I am beyond grateful and more-so delighted to have had the opportunity of working on this wonderfully inspiring project, and feel honoured to have spent time getting to know and understand the individuals that courageously deal with reading and writing struggles on a daily basis; and it has humbled me endlessly.

Working on ‘The Write Offs’ was so much more than a job for me; it truly taught me a life lesson and was an experience that I will genuinely take with me through the rest of my life.
