The Britannia Staff Union (BSU) has been inspired by recent Olympic success, and is encouraging members to Go For Gold when it comes to learning.

Going For Gold is a new initiative by the union’s YouLearn ULF project which focuses on encouraging its members to try out more non vocational learning by rewarding time spent learning with Bronze, Silver and ultimately Gold Certificates that recognise the hard work spent learning.

Many online non vocational courses are not accredited, or if they are there is a charge to the learner which puts them off gaining recognition for the course. Going For Gold means that BSU members can claim a Certificate for online learning – and keep a record of progression into the bargain.

YouLearn Project Worker Neil Seepujak said:

A lot of our members sign up for online ‘non vocational’ courses, which provide great learning opportunities, but little recognition. We wanted to encourage members to sign up to the courses and receive a Certificate for the number of guided learning hours they undertake."

Learners completing 25 guided learning hours can apply for a Bronze Certificate, 50 hours would achieve a Silver Certificate, whilst those who gain up to 100 hours would get the Gold Certificate.

Neil added:

The hours can be spread over a number of online courses, and learners can build up a portfolio of courses to increase their hours. Sending in proof is easy, all we need is a screenshot of the course completion page or similar and we can record their learning for them to help members track progression. 

We are also looking at ways to add Bronze, Silver and Gold digital badges that learners can add to social media profiles."

This is a really exciting idea, and we are certain that members will appreciate being able to be accredited for online learning. It’s something we feel other unions may want to explore, and are keen to spread the idea."
