Andrew Cliffe, a Nursing Assistant from Merseyside, visited the Union Learning Zone (ULZ)  at POA Ashworth, Maghull to complete a Level 2 NVQ in Health and Social Care (which also incorporates Functional Skills Level 1 English and Maths) as a mandatory requirement of his job role.  

Before attending the ULZ, Andrew’s learning journey was tarnished by bad learning experiences all the way back to his school days. Andrew suffers from dyslexia which has damaged his confidence and made learning a struggle in the past – and he was initially very hesitant when attending the centre.

At first Andrew didn’t want to be at the centre at all!  But after spending some time studying with the support of facilitators Sean Griffin and Andy McColl from POA Learning; Andrew started to enjoy what he was doing, became engaged during sessions, and most importantly started to learn.

Through much hard work, Andrew completed the course and gained his qualifications. Throughout the course Andrew’s confidence grew and he seemed a lot happier when attending the sessions.  

Andrew commented upon his own growing confidence saying:

When I was at school I was always told to sit at the back or get sent out of the room. After completing this course with POA Learning I finally feel like I have learnt how to learn.”

Andrew’s success at NVQ Level 2 led him to enrol upon a Level 3 NVQ in Health & Social Care.  Again, this course incorporated Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths. On attending the ULZ once more, it was obvious to POA Learning staff how much more confident and open to learning Andrew was.  Andrew’s increased confidence and earlier success had allowed him to see a path of progression both in learning and in his career.  

Andrew stated that:

Attending the POA Learning centre has changed my life in so many ways. Even in little ways such as when I was asked to write out a birthday card for a family member. Usually, I would have gotten my wife to do this but I now do these things myself. I’m also looking at continuing my career with the qualifications I have gained.  Currently, I am applying for Nurse training with Edgehill University as an undergraduate”.

Andrew’s learning journey has not been without challenges and frustrations.  However, his commitment and the support of POA Learning has resulted in a remarkable success story that is set to continue.
