Just another Massage Monday for Aegis learners

Learn with Aegis has supported a pop-up night school on Monday evenings over 20 weeks during the winter at the head office site of Yorkshire Building Society in Bradford.

Aegis members learn massage skills

Learn with Aegis, with the support of the business, were given the opportunity to run a fully funded ITEC Level 2 Qualification in Complementary Therapy. The course was offered to colleagues, with the White Rose Beauty College providing the training on the evening.

The course covered an introduction and provision of zone therapy, aromatherapy oil blends, body and Indian head massage. The content of the course included a lot of practical activity, so needless to say, there has been a few raised eye brows around the business when talking to other learners about the course.

Learners did say it did feel a little strange at first practising massage on each other. However, it wasn’t long before all the class really did embrace the training, learning a new skill and all have formed a close bond. Included within the course was both a Maths and English assessment, to ensure learners didn’t need any additional support in that area, from the tutor.

The learners have been very positive about the benefits of the Monday sessions.

Toni said:

not only have I been able to learn a new skill, which is totally out of my comfort zone, but I’ve also met colleagues across the business that I would now consider friends.”

Whilst Sharon felt that the course was intriguing as it was something she had never done before. She explained:

I have always found the beauty industry interesting and have done nails and make up before but thought to myself WHY NOT.”

The tutor is amazing; she is level headed and a laugh but also professional at the same time. This course has been so much fun and being able to interact with different people who you work with is great.”

I am looking forward to my journey going forward as I have now enrolled on a professional Nail course for April this year and I will be enrolling in July to be on the level 3 Beautician/Therapy course.”

Alison added:

I got involved as I wanted to do something for myself, and not something job specific. I’ve met a lovely group of ladies, most of whom our paths have never crossed in my 25 years at the Society! I’ve now got a whole new subject area I want to learn about and I’ve already done some online training for aromatherapy. I’m really going to miss our get togethers.”

Learn with Aegis Project Worker Julie Thompson is very pleased with how popular the courses have been and they way they have not only looked at ways to reduce stress in the workplace but have bought together colleagues.

Julie is now looking forward to future learning opportunities and said:

We hope to continue to look for opportunities for courses in different subjects, to utilise this training centre again. Learners got so much out of the course, both from learning a new skill, obtaining a qualification that they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to take, and with their own wellbeing. It has also encouraged everyone who took the course, to take their learning further.”
