Each year the unionlearn Annual Conference recognises the hard work of Union Learning Reps (ULR) and encourages unions to nominate reps for the ULR of the year awards. The awards are presented to ULRs to showcase how they are making a difference and changing people’s lives through union learning.

This year UNISON ULR Carol McGrath, who works in Adult Social Care at Leeds City Council, was presented with the award for Supporting Learners with Literacy Skills.

Carol’s nomination highlighted

Carol has been actively involved setting up reading groups, a lending library and promoting the Reading Ahead Challenge (formerly called the Six Book Challenge) and that Carol has grown in confidence as a ULR but also as a tutor, delivering short workshops.

She has a calming presence but she inspires respect and is very approachable."
