Unionlearn spent a day supporting Union Learning Reps (ULRs) from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) following a request from RCM organising Officer Rae Trotter.

Unionlearn was approached at the end of their recent Union Learning Fund Project, as Project Officer Mark Rowe explained: 

Rae wanted support for ULRs and Midwifery Support Reps on learning in the workplace and specifically around apprenticeship support.”

Mark, and fellow Project Officer Matt Pointon pulled together a full day training event based around “Planning a Learning Event.”

The event was held at the Unite offices in Salford, and broken down into 3 separate sessions which encouraged ULRs to think about how to put on an event and give them the ideas and tools to hold successful learning activities.

The day focused on collaborative working, consultation and delivery – there was also a session from Robin Graham from Laughter Association UK that promoted mental health and wellbeing and added something very different to the day.

Matt said;

It was really good to be able to support UL​ ​Rs and help give the skills to deliver great learning events in their workplaces. All the attending were very positive and couldn’t wait to get back to work and start planning activities for colleagues.”

Mark added that as the event went down so well there is another now being planned as Mark says:

This event was the first for ULRs we will do another session late September at RCM head office in London. Following that they intend to hold a Midwifery Support Worker Reps forum on apprenticeships in Birmingham this November – which we be supporting.”
