UNISON ULRs help staff at threatened care home

More than two dozen staff at a Leeds care home threatened with closure have improved their job prospects by taking a range of courses organised by UNISON learning rep Julie Butterfield.

The Green provides specialist residential and day care for older people with dementia but its future is uncertain since the council announced last year it might have to close four care homes, including The Green, to balance the books.

However, since Julie first met the 30 staff to discuss their learning needs, UNISON and GMB members have been improving their IT skills with Learn My Way, gaining Level 2 English and maths qualifications, and enrolling on distance learning courses in mental health awareness and principles of dementia care.

As a result of union and community campaigning, the council is currently looking into postponing closure of The Green.

Julie said;

By gaining these qualifications, the staff will be better prepared for getting jobs elsewhere if the home is closed."
