Usdaw’s Question of Learning in Stoke-on-Trent
Award winning ULR Julienne Nicklin, from Tesco Trent Vale in Stoke-on-Trent, developed a highly successful learning tool to run a week-long festival of learning in her store during June 2016. The idea was to use a quiz to highlight a different aspect of learning each day such as Maths, English, ICT and the courses colleagues could take relating to these topics.
The week consisted of:
Day 1 – Music and Media
Day 2 – ICT
Day 3 – Maths
Day 4 – English
Day 5 – Languages Quiz
Each quiz was a series of six questions that varied in different levels, which Julienne created herself.
Julienne said
The aim of the week’s quizzes was to raise awareness and engage the colleagues in learning in a fun way with small prizes being offered for each with a separate prize for the overall week to win. This created a buzz in the store and allowed people who would not normally take part in learning to get involved."
As a result of the Festival of Learning campaign, Julienne recruited 70 learners ranging from Functional Skills learners that were signposted from the English and Maths taster sessions and people participating in the National Numeracy Challenge, a Sign Language course arranged to take place instore for 11 learners, IT learners being signposted and learners being signed up to Distance Learning courses.
Equality and Diversity information was captured for each learner that took part in learning activity ensuring that all learning opportunities were captured and allowed for Julienne to track learner’s achievements and offer progression opportunities.
From the event that has been delivered, Julienne has agreed for the Mobile ULR who supports the area to use the quizzes and taster materials to share with other ULRs. The long term aim is for all of the ULRs to work together to develop taster sessions that can be circulated amongst each other and share best practice.
