I am thrilled to be working with the BFAWU Learning services as the new project worker and enthusiastic about bringing learning to comrades across the region.
Over the past couple of months I have been working as a Project Worker on an interim basis, this gave me great insight into the role and an appetite to carry on. I have been working as a Branch Secretary prior to and during the interim Project Worker role.
During my time as a Branch secretary I have been involved in representing members in disciplinary investigations, grievances, negotiating with the employer for better terms and conditions but more relevant to learning services, I have been involved with promoting learning on site.
I have been involved in re- establishing the learning centre, doing surveys, getting learning agreement signed, meetings with management, learning providers and project worker.
Along with colleagues in the branch we were able to reach an agreement with the employer to run courses in maths and English on site.
Some colleagues at Fox’s Biscuits completed the pre-entry English course last year. This gave them and others encouragement to progress their learning. Currently there are two classes doing the Functional Skills English course with further courses planned.
My own personal development was only made possible by taking up learning opportunities made available to me both by my employer and the BFAWU.
I have held all the different posts within the unions structure at Branch Level and am thrilled to progress and develop in the wider structure. In particular I am happy with the chance to work with the BFAWU Learning services team to replicate and build upon previous successes.
I also look forward to working with the Full-Time Officers to promote lifelong learning and skills as a mainstream issue within the union.
