I’ve been working with unionlearn to revamp their website, with the new version having just been launched.

Funding for unionlearn had undergone some challenges after the government removed support and so the new website better reflects the revised offerings, while being designed to be flexible and adaptable as the organisation evolves into the future.

The look and feel of the site have been overhauled, with a strong, new graphic design and revamped information architecture. This includes bolder use of the unionlearn brand and expanding the screen width for larger devices while further optimising it for smartphones and tablets.

The site is built on the latest version of Drupal, the powerful, open-source Content Management System (CMS) used to power sites like the Economist, Tesla, Pfiizer and the TUC. We’ve also adopted the latest versions of other technologies, such as the ‘Bootstrap 5’ framework for responsive, mobile friendly design.

There is a wealth of content to support union led learning, including hundreds of case studies, publications and blogs showcasing the work unions have carried out over the years. These really help shine a light on how effective union learning can be.

Key areas like apprenticeships, mid-life learning and higher learning at work are covered in depth, with dedicated sections boasting a range of resources. There is also a free online learning directory, which compiles the best free online learning available in one place.

The website’s Careerzone utilises government ‘Big Data’ sources to provide a breakdown of information for hundreds of occupations, including average pay and conditions as well as looking at future employment trends and gender pay gap data. In depth analysis compares jobs by average pay, hours and unemployment rate. There is also deep dive comparison of the gender pay gap across all occupations.

Unionlearn provides some additional free tools for ULRs and unions. For example, Skillcheck is an initial assessment facility, which can be used through a browser or dedicated app. Similarly, the interactive Value My Skills online tool aims to help workers identify transferable skills. The unionlearn website provides all the information needed about these facilities, include how to access them.
