We came to Alvescot Lodge in November for stage two of our Union Learning Rep Course having completed stage one earlier in the year. Most of the student’s that participated in stage one returned - which was a great opportunity to catch up and talk about any circumstances that each had experienced up to that point. Everyone seemed to have gained a lot of knowledge within that time and most had courses set up in their various learning centres.  

The tutors for the week really helped make the course relaxed and fun. In fact, both were very knowledgeable in most trade union aspects and helped a lot in task orientated situations. Some of the students seemed unsure of the ULR role at the beginning, but by the end of the week those who did seem unsure of the role had more focus and confidence to take back and use in their learning centres.   

As a Lead ULR, I feel this course will help in my overall learning journey. It has given me more options to use and explore, such as Left-Click. Left-Click is a useful learning tool and can help reps and members develop new skills. With Left-Click growing, ULRs now have a genuine tool to take forward and use in the future.

The facilities on site were very good and the catering all week was excellent with plenty of choice for all. On the last night we had a quiz, most people got involved and everyone seemed to have a brilliant time. With a number of budding eggheads on show, the evening proved what a great tool networking is. It gets people together from all around and helps create friendships. We all have the same principles and beliefs and all want to keep our union strong! With education at the head of this, it will stay strong!

I spoke to students during the week and here are some comments from students who attended the week’s course. Mandy Baker from Meridian said:

"I found the course to be really useful. The second part has given me more practical and hands on with my training approach. I feel it gave me room to grow and make decisions. I really have fallen in love with Alvescot and this part of the country."

Whilst Ben Ryan from South West 7 added

"An inspirational week shared with like-minded people, with a common goal. This is a course which has given me more drive to succeed. Also, I would like to say, many thanks to all the staff at Alvescot Lodge."

Mick Firman summed it up when he said:

"What a great week I’ve had. Everyone took full part in every activity and we all got on, so well!"

All in all the training we have received has given us the tools, and confidence, to go back to our workplaces and learning centres and support our members achieve their learning aims.
