Green Jobs in Cumbria - Consultation event for unions
TUC Northern is teaming up with Cumbria Action for Sustainability to host an event that aims to explore the potential for green jobs in the region.
The “Green Jobs in Cumbria” event is being held on Friday 18 December at 13.00 and is aimed at Trade Union Officers, reps and members.
Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) has received funding from the Quadrature Climate Foundation to identify the potential for ‘green’ jobs – in Cumbria as a whole and West Cumbria (Allerdale and Copeland) in particular.
The TUC have been approached by CAfS and Wingspan Consulting to pull together an online consultation event for trade unions.
Green jobs are defined here as employment opportunities that are good for both people and the environment.
CAfS has commissioned two teams of researchers (Opal Research and Green House Think Tank) to:
- Identify the sorts of change in the local economy that would be needed for Cumbria to become carbon neutral
- Quantify the scale of green jobs that would be created across a range of sectors as Cumbria becomes carbon neutral
The research teams have completed the initial phase of their research and would now like to share their work to-date with a wide range of local stakeholders and are very keen to hear from trade unions. A number of online consultation events are taking place, the purpose of these is to:
- Inform stakeholders about the project
- Secure feedback from stakeholders on approaches and preliminary findings
- Learn from stakeholders – eg about existing/new activity to reduce emissions and develop green jobs
- Explore with stakeholders the barriers to unlocking potential for emissions reduction and green jobs in Cumbria
- Encourage people to take part in next phase of stakeholder engagement (in early 2021)
- Foster collaboration between all stakeholders with an interest in developing green jobs in Cumbria
