Read and write with Literacy Works Week

Unionlearn is gearing up to the fourth Literacy Works Week, and from 9th to 13th March will be celebrating all things to do with reading, writing and language.

The week will be packed full of ideas, quizzes and cases studies, which include:

  • The launch of a “Grammar Matters” a new SkillCheck quiz and a fun way to see what you remember about your basic grammar rules. Challenge your colleagues to try to score better than you!
  • Promotion of the recently launched batch of new Quick Reads, the short engaging books everyone loves, that were released on 20th February. There’s no better time to get in touch with your union or unionlearn to find out how you can get Quick Read books to your workplace. Why not organise a book club?
  • Follow @unionlearn in Twitter and test your brain with our daily literacy quiz questions during the week. All correct answers will be available by the end of the week.
  • Join in and tweet about your literacy activities using #literacyworks hashtag.
  • Read the daily blogs in unionlearn website or take a stab at writing a blog yourself. We’d love to hear which books you love or what prompted you to improve your writing skills, for instance. Get in touch with Kirsi ([email protected]) if you have an idea and want to start writing.
  • Take a look at the eNotes, short online learning modules, provided by TU Education. We’d recommend Write Now! for updating your writing skills, Read Now! for learning new reading techniques and Language support for workers to get ideas how to set up ESOL support going at the workplace.

Union learning reps and project workers are welcome to Making skills count: Unions’ English, maths and digital skills network meeting 10th March in London.

Kirsi said: “On the agenda we have UNISON sharing what their members’ skills survey revealed and how NEU’s transversal skills project can be of help tp other unions and we’ll even ponder how to set up treasure hunts for English and maths.”
