Week long campaign shows #LiteracyWorks

Unionlearn’s annual campaign to support reading, writing and ESOL in the workplace is launched today. Literacy Works kicks off today (February 25th) and is a week for unions to campaign on literacy and language skills whether it is writing stories, reading and sharing books or encouraging all colleagues to take up an initial assessment to check out their English skills.

The week will see regular guest blogs and case studies posted up that aim to encourage workers to discover new and interesting ways to improve their literacy skills.

Unionlearn Policy Officer Kirsi Kekki, said:

Literacy Works week is an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of reading, writing and communication skills for work and life generally.”

Union learning reps and learning centres in workplaces across the country are running activities and events ranging from book swaps to reading groups to ESOL classes – and we’d love to hear about these stories throughout this week.”

Literacy Works week is an ideal opportunity to try out the English unit on unionlearn’s new initial assessment tool SkillCheck, or try out an eNote from TUC Education.

Unionlearn will also be hosting a event on the Thursday with the unionlearn English, maths and digital skills network discussing opportunities and ways to promote workplace learning. The event as speakers from the Open University and sessions covering dyslexia and digital champions. More details here.

The week is all about getting involved, promoting literacy skills and encouraging others to support learners – so don’t forget to tell us about your activities using the #literacyworks hashtag or share it on the unionlearn facebook page.
